Preston Campbell, PhD
Practice Lead, Pharmacology and Toxicology
Preston is the Practice Lead in Pharmacology and Toxicology at Venebio Group, LLC specializing in drug development, regulatory navigation, and product strategy. He received his first small grant over 20 years ago for research on meningitis and then moved on to vaccine development work at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He then transitioned to cancer research at Vanderbilt University and discovered a mechanistic link between stress, depression, and breast cancer metastasis and patient survival that could be targeted with beta blockers. Afterward Dr. Campbell spent several years doing medicinal chemistry drug development focused on kinase inhibitors before working as a systems pharmacologist applying data science to clinical data sets and investigating lung cancer resistance.
Preston received his PhD in Pharmacology from Vanderbilt University and business and management training at the Vanderbilt Owen School. He has extensive experience with clinical pharmacology, bone and orthopedic research, natural product medicinal chemistry, drug development and repurposing, and computational modeling. Outside of academia Preston has been a consultant for a wide range of projects spanning medical diagnostics, antibody production, agriculture technology.
Dr. Campbell has more than 20 publications, has had his work has been featured in Nature Cancer Reviews and received an International Award for Publication Excellence from Calcified Tissue International, a leading bone and orthopedics journal. He has numerous grants and awards including a Keystone Fellowship and a FLARES Leadership Award from the Endocrine Society.
